YIT Estonia Created a Wall of Achievements from 30 Years of Most Distinctive Projects
Celebrating its 30th year of operation this year, the YIT Estonia team gathered stories about the most vivid projects that have remained in memory over the years and compiled them on an achievement wall created for the jubilee. According to the company's management, each story is in its own way a tribute to all those thousands of people who over three decades have helped YIT build a better Estonia.
On the YIT 30 achievement wall, you can find stories about the construction of thousands of homes, cozy and functional office buildings as well as modern urban spaces that the YIT design and construction team will remember for their complex architectural solutions, innovative work methods and unexpected events that befell the teams during the work.
"Our baggage of experience includes, for example, construction work carried out at the highest level in cooperation with alpinists during the renovation of Tallinn TV Tower, as well as the support of Bekker's port pier deep on the seabed with the help of divers, which we named the most difficult project to measure with the eye," says Margus Põim, member of YIT Estonia's board.
Among the thirty success stories compiled for the jubilee, you can also find the construction of Rakvere Vallimäe as the biggest change in the city center, the renovation of Tallinn Airport's runway and other areas of the territory as the most secretive construction works, as well as the work on expanding the perimeter of Ämari Air Base, which despite the discovery of contamination that complicated the work and an extensive archaeological find, received the title "The project that stayed best on schedule".
According to Põim, every construction and development project has been memorable and educational in its own way, but the company's team feels special pride in the development and construction of nearly 4,000 homes.
"Our top-level experts have been able to create very special homes in private garden city environments where access with construction machinery initially seems like an almost impossible task. On the other hand, our team has been able to see perspective in previously faceless wastelands, where today complete residential areas have emerged, such as the Mäepealse quarter developed over 15 years on the border of Nõmme and Mustamäe. One particularly remarkable transformation is the Vibu quarter, which marked the beginning of the transformation of a dangerously deteriorated and unattractive industrial and military area into a fully-fledged Kalaranna living environment, where real estate prices continue to set new records due to the abundance of potential buyers," said Põim.
According to YIT's management, the company is in top form in its 30th jubilee year, participating in high-level projects and being a reliable partner to both private clients and the state. In the coming years, the company plans to place special emphasis on building dream homes and maintaining its position among market leaders.
"Focusing on urban space as a living environment through residential development projects is also a priority in the YIT group's recently confirmed 2022-2025 strategy. The group's goal is to grow the housing business by 25% by 2025 and to achieve this goal, we are considering today investing the proceeds from the sale of Russian business into purchasing promising plots of land. However, growth must go hand in hand with activities that help reduce the impact of our business on the environment and ensure the survival of a humane and sustainable living environment in conditions of rapid urbanization," said Põim.
According to him, Estonia has enough clients and cooperation partners who dare to undertake ambitious and innovative projects. "For us as builders, large-scale urban space or mobility-transforming projects certainly provide great excitement, such as the creation of new central squares in Estonian cities during the 100th jubilee of the Estonian Republic or the Rail Baltica project currently underway, in which we are already participating in several phases," said Põim.
YIT Estonia's predecessor began operating in Estonia in 1991, bearing different names at various stages of development such as AS FCM and AS FKSM. In 2001, Finland's largest construction services provider YIT acquired a majority stake in the company, and in a transaction that took place in 2018, the infrastructure services group Lemminkäinen was merged with YIT. During its years of operation, YIT Estonia has built over 700 buildings, which include nearly 4,000 new homes.
