What to Keep in Mind When Installing an Electric Sauna in Your Apartment?

More and more apartment owners want to build a sauna in their home. However, activities related to saunas involve much more than simply selecting building materials in a store and carrying out the construction process.

The fact that saunas are planned and built in new apartment buildings has been a common practice for some time, but they are increasingly found in panel buildings and Khrushchyovka-style apartments, where they were not originally present. However, the difference is that while new buildings have saunas already included in the original project, in older apartment buildings they have been added later, which often means various problems: the sauna is simply unregistered, in reality it cannot/should not be built at all, or some factors have simply not been thought through.

There are several options for how a sauna can be planned in an apartment:

  • according to the plan, the apartment has a toilet, bathroom, and storage room, and the bathroom is enlarged at the expense of the storage room to build/install a sauna;
  • a shower corner is built instead of a bathtub, which also saves space and allows sufficient floor area for building/installing a sauna;
  • the toilet and bathroom are combined into one room, during which the location of sanitary fixtures and equipment is changed so that additional free space is created for building/installing a sauna.

When building a sauna in an apartment, an important role is played by the apartment and building's electrical system, since when installing an electric heater, it must be determined whether the overall electrical capacity actually allows for its installation. If the original project does not include a sauna, then the project to be prepared must also include changes to the electrical system. If the sauna is in the original project and simply not registered in the building registry, the situation is simpler and changes can be made more easily in the building registry based on the plan materials.

A warm recommendation is to do proper preliminary work before implementing the sauna idea. As mentioned, you need to understand whether it is at all possible to install a sauna in a given apartment and, if so, what work stages must be completed so that everything is done properly, without subsequent damage. We recommend involving professionals in the process who are familiar with the subject. For example, one option is to hire a designer, since it is clear that, for instance, changes to the electrical system are generally not handled by the sauna installer.
