Tallinn Airport's First Air Cargo Terminal in the South Business District Receives Cornerstone
On Tuesday, October 1st, the cornerstone was laid for the first cargo terminal in the southern area of Tallinn Airport's business district, Airport City. A 5,250 square meter air cargo terminal for FedEx Express Estonia will be built there, which will be completed in July 2025.
Airport City creates new and better opportunities for companies whose businesses depend on being located near the airport or runway and aircraft.
„An airport is not merely Estonia's gateway, but is one of the cornerstones of economic functioning and economic growth. Good air connections are vitally important for our country given Estonia's location. But along with passengers, goods also move. The development of airport infrastructure boosts the growth of aviation-related businesses. Today's cornerstone laying is the next step in Tallinn Airport's development," said Infrastructure Minister Vladimir Svet.
The net floor area of the cargo terminal being built by FedEx Express Estonia is 5,250 m2, which consists of 1,450 m2 of office space and 3,800 m2 of warehouse building, supplemented by loading platforms for 57 vehicles and a parking lot with 123 parking spaces for cargo terminal employees and visitors.
„This investment demonstrates FedEx's continued commitment to strengthening the Central and Eastern European direction to meet growing demand in logistics, e-commerce and local production. Thanks to new solutions and a strategic location, we can offer our customers even better services, supporting their international ambitions and operations," said FedEx Europe Ground Operations Vice President Mariusz Mik. „FedEx is the world's largest express transportation company, offering fast and reliable delivery of shipments to more than 220 countries and locations. Thanks to our unique global air and ground network, which includes Tallinn, we can connect people with opportunities."
"Airport City's goal is to create a functional and operational business environment for aviation-related companies, modern infrastructure and thereby support aviation development," said Airport City Director Teet Raudsep. "I am delighted to welcome FedEx Express as the first cargo terminal tenant, for whom we are creating a modern working environment so they can ensure fast and professional cargo transport for their clients. I also wish to thank Maru Ehitus, with whom cooperation has proceeded excellently from contract signing to today, and I believe we can say the same when the building is completed."
The FedEx Express Estonia cargo terminal being built in the southern area of the airport was designed by Norte OÜ, designers Enn Rajasaar and Priit Ehala, and is being built by Maru Ehitus AS.
"Maru Ehitus's mission is to build tomorrow, in which we ourselves want to live. For us, this is based on good and lasting relationships, innovation and sustainable solutions. Here I thank Airport City for their trust and good cooperation. Also for the fact that the client does not want to simply build a building, but considers the building's entire lifecycle and footprint. We have used several innovative solutions here that also develop us as engineers," said Maru Ehitus Board Member Margo Dengo.
"Tallinn Airport's mission is to connect Estonia with the world. In today's business environment, however, additional factors are increasingly important, such as how to grow revenues that are not related solely to passenger transport. By growing airport revenues, we in turn create opportunities to invest in airport infrastructure development, new technological solutions and passenger comfort," said Tallinn Airport Board Chairman Riivo Tuvike. "Most European airports have long not focused solely on passenger transport in growing their revenue base, but an increasingly significant part of airports' turnover comes from the sale of goods and services to passengers and other partners around the airport. Proximity to the runway and the availability of related services are a major added value for transport and logistics companies, aircraft maintenance and service companies, hotels, warehousing service providers, and industrial companies."
Airport City is an airport business district and gateway to international business. The district encompasses all business spaces and new developments offered by Tallinn Airport in the neighborhoods surrounding the runway. What makes the district special is the synergy between aviation and business, its unique location and international prestige.
Airport City consists of four regions surrounding Tallinn Airport's runway located on approximately 120 hectares of land, which allow for the development of aviation-related real estate. The regions are divided according to their location in relation to the runway into South, East, North and West areas. View additionally the Airport City introduction video.
