Small Kitchen – 15 Tips to Make It Work Well
Many of us have a home whose heart is a beloved little kitchen. No matter how small the kitchen is, guests still like to gather there to chat, and it's also nice to enjoy a cup of tea and munch on cookies in the evenings. But how do you furnish your small beloved kitchen so that it is both functional and a cozy nest? If you can manage this, you are a true interior design master.
If your home has a small kitchen, we've gathered a number of tips here where you'll certainly find something useful.
The most important thing is a good kitchen layout
Of course, this requires a well-thought-out system of storage places, cabinets and drawers, because just because you have a small kitchen doesn't mean you won't cook, right? Maybe you occasionally treat guests to a five-course dinner and for that you need quite a lot of kitchen utensils, each of which needs its own place.
Keep only necessary things in your kitchen
If you can keep the kitchen free of unnecessary clutter, then you're already halfway there. In a small kitchen there isn't much room for knick-knacks. Okay, sometimes you manage to squeeze something in here and there, but rather less than more.
Empty walls are wasted space
If you have enough space for things and a super-good cabinet solution, then of course you can leave the wall empty, we won't stop you. But in a small kitchen every square centimeter counts, and that's why it would be a good idea to use the walls fully.
Attach some kitchen utensils to the wall
You can attach things like a knife holder and spice jars to the wall to keep the work surface free. You can also attach pots and pans to the wall if it suits your interior design.
Use the ceiling too
Yes, hang pots and pans from the ceiling like in an old farmhouse kitchen. Of course, you'll need to buy some nice new pots and pans for that. Maybe those old ones are already due for replacement.... Call in an expert if needed for placing hooks and such.
Transparent plastic chairs
If your small kitchen also has a dining table, you can make it look the most airy with transparent plastic chairs (of course, make sure they match your overall interior). In any case, it's an idea worth considering in our opinion.
Use a bench with storage instead of chairs
If you don't like plastic chairs, you can use a bench. A bench takes up less space than chairs and also serves as a great storage place for kitchen utensils that you need less often. Like, for example, a citrus juicer.
Pull-out work surfaces
A good solution in a small kitchen is pull-out work surfaces, such as a cutting board. And if it has a hole through which you can throw carrot peels and onion skins directly into the trash, then it's especially cool.
Drawer dividers
A spoon, a can opener and two forks in the kitchen is unfortunately not enough. There are quite a lot of eating and cooking utensils and to keep control of them, you need drawer dividers.
Vertical pull-out drawers
If you order new kitchen furniture, these are the things that will really pay for themselves. They simply hold a lot of things but take up very little space.
Even a small kitchen needs plenty of light
If you think that one ceiling light is enough to light a small kitchen, then we're happy to tell you that it's not at all the case. Be sure to place spot lights there too, for example above the work surface and elsewhere. This way even the kitchen corners that would otherwise be in shadow get light and the space feels bigger.
Also make sure that it's possible to create cozy lighting in the kitchen, by the light of which you can chat with your spouse or a friend.
A table with a leaf
Often a small kitchen is used by only one or two people. But when the third and fourth guests come, you can use the leaf to make the table bigger so that a couple of coffee cups and wine glasses can fit there.
High-gloss cabinets
High-gloss kitchen furniture plays a useful role as a light reflector and the room feels a little bigger again.
U-shaped kitchen
If you have a really small kitchen and you can't fit in there to eat anyway, then a good idea is to solve it in a U-shape, meaning all three walls that go against the door are covered with cabinets or shelves. Except for the window of course.
The old good paint-it-all-white trick!
There's nothing more to add. Paint everything white and the room becomes fresh and spacious.
