Balcony – the Best Thing in a Summer City Apartment

A balcony is one of those wonderfully unsaid places where you can breathe fresh air without leaving home and catch some sun rays. Although summer hasn't quite arrived yet, you can already spend pleasant time outdoors under a blanket right now. For example, we're sitting here now and putting together some thoughts for you on how you could turn your balcony into one cozy little nest.

There are of course plenty of ways to do this, and here we'll give you just a few ideas to inspire you. We believe that after reading our tips, your fingers will be itching and in a few days you'll have a nice new morning coffee corner ready.

Clear out the clutter

We don't know how things are for you, but for some people, all sorts of junk tends to accumulate on their balcony: clothes drying racks and floor washing buckets; someone's old sneakers and empty flower pots; an old carpet waiting to be taken to the country.

To start, clear all of this away from the balcony and see how much space you actually have.

Install proper flooring

If your balcony doesn't have proper flooring yet, then definitely start with that. After all, you want to walk on the balcony with your feet, and concrete isn't the most comfortable thing underfoot. With terrace board flooring, you'll definitely be very happy. Some people, however, might prefer artificial turf instead. Even assembled wooden sauna sections or ceramic tiles give a very nice result.

Mount flower boxes

It sounds like something self-evident, but many of us have actually put off planting flowers on our balcony. Take this on this year and you'll immediately see how your mood improves every morning when your eye catches the balcony flowers.

Plant herbs

Take those flower pots that are sitting empty on your balcony and plant herbs in them. This way you kill two birds with one stone: you have fresh herbs at hand and your balcony has lots of greenery. We wrote a bit more about herbs here.

Put a rug on the floor

Of course, a nice outdoor rug also belongs on the balcony floor.

Choose suitable chairs and a small table

Do you like hanging chairs? Small wooden stools? Or perhaps benches? Your seat can be anything, and if, for example, old apple crates feel too hard to sit on, that problem can be solved with thick cushions.

Create atmosphere with cushions

With colorful and bright cushions, you can create almost as good an atmosphere on your balcony as with colorful flowers. Even better if you have both flowers and cushions on your balcony. If flowers only appreciate a little rain, then make sure the cushions don't get wet. Sitting on a wet cushion ruins the mood – we can say that from experience.

Put some effort into lighting

As you know, light plays a very important role in every room, and the same goes for the balcony. Although soon we'll have a time when it hardly gets dark at all, you'll still want to enjoy your balcony pleasures on August evenings. Use, for example, wall or ceiling lamps, or even candles. In that case, always think about safety!

Houseplants outside for the summer

Bring your houseplants outside for the summer and your balcony decoration has begun. At the same time, this is also very beneficial for indoor flowers.

Mount a shelf or two on the wall

On shelves you can place both decorative and necessary items. Of course, a flower pot also fits here.

Buy a small cabinet

In a cabinet or, in the case of a larger balcony, a chest of drawers, you can keep everything you need for one pleasant sitting session: appetizer plates, tea cups and wine glasses. And of course mosquito repellents, candles and other necessities. The balcony is a smaller space and it's better if clutter is out of sight.

A fragrant plant creates atmosphere

Have you noticed how much a good scent affects your mood? That's precisely why we recommend that if you have any space at all, place one large flower pot on your balcony with a nice-smelling plant inside. For example, lavender.

Hydrangea is simply beautiful

Ah, our favorite! It's not particularly fragrant, but a blooming hydrangea makes any room pleasant and cozy, whether it's indoors or outdoors. Buy a nice large potted plant from the garden center right away, but don't expect that you'll be able to maintain it through the winter. Some more skilled people who enjoy working with plants will definitely be able to manage this, but we haven't succeeded yet.

Climbing ivy for cover

If your balcony railing is the kind that can be covered from the inside with anything without affecting the building's exterior appearance, then cover it with, for example, climbing ivy. Ivy gives a nice earthy feel and adds coziness.
