What should a bedroom be like so that despite a fast and stressful pace of life we could ensure healthy sleep and full rest? What could a bedroom be like so that when we wake up we don't have to admit that we didn't sleep a wink or that we tossed and turned all night? Even a hedgehog would understand that our dreams can only come true if we wake up in the morning happy and refreshed.

A bedroom – the most private and intimate room where we focus on sleep, relax from daily fatigue, or clear our minds. This room is usually closed to strangers. It is the room we dream about and think of first when acquiring new living space or renovating an old one.

Today there are many experts who share their knowledge on the topic of healthy sleep. It is believed that one-third of Estonians suffer from sleep problems. But we can do a lot ourselves for good sleep and well-being. This time we focus on the color solutions in the bedroom.

The color palette of the surrounding environment significantly affects our mood, sense of well-being, and mental state. An inappropriate color choice in the bedroom's walls or furniture can affect our sleep, overall well-being, work capacity, and even cause depression. To ensure good sleep and rest, it is very important to use the right construction and interior finishing materials and the right approaches and solutions in interior design.

Since ancient times, a classic color solution has been preferred in bedrooms, which consists of pastel and muted color tones. These make a person calm, balanced, and focused – all these mental states promote falling asleep. While luxurious and vibrant color tones activate and enhance our attention, a pastel color palette, on the other hand, reduces tension and stress. Practically every primary color can be tuned to its pastel undertone, which has a calming effect and ensures good sleep. Psychologists also recommend classic color solutions when life lacks self-confidence and stability. An ivory color with grayish, milky beige, coffee brown, and whitish undertones would be an excellent color solution for a bedroom.

Color choices differ depending on whether the room is on the sunny or shaded side, small or spacious. In a bedroom where windows face the sun, it can be very hot on a warm summer day. In this case, delicate and cool undertones create an apparently cool and fresh feeling, help to relax and fall asleep.

Light blue, lavender, lilac, pistachio tones and sea blue, silver, and cream tones apparently increase the dimensions of the bedroom and create an airy and fresh impression. If the bedroom is cold and there is little light in the room, warm color tones come to the rescue. Delicate beige, yellow, gold, pink, peach, and terracotta tones create a warm and comfortable feeling. For a dark and small room, it is more appropriate to choose maximally muted and delicate color tones. In light and spacious rooms, you can boldly use juicy but not overly bright color tones.

Psychologists consider dark, purple, and brown tones unsuitable for bedrooms, as they evoke depressive thoughts, anxiety, and melancholy. Today's fashionable dark brown color tones are not the best choice for a bedroom, especially if the bedroom also partially serves as an office. If dark or bright tones are to your liking, you can use them in details.

Just as the lullabies of Sleep-Matti, Sleep-Liisu, or some other sleep spirit were in our folklore half-recited and half-sung, the bedroom could also be in broken or muted color tones, creating a visually magical and otherworldly effect.
