You've surely said it yourself, or heard someone use the phrase "things used to be made to last!" In the old days, furniture wasn't meant for frequent replacement but had to serve families for decades. And it managed to do so! With pride! At the same time, nowadays stores are full of exciting, interesting furniture pieces made from fascinating materials that are modern, inviting and captivating. If you like both of these approaches, then it's time to learn how to mix old and new furniture together!

Choosing the right style is one of the most important aspects of the entire process. Do you like furniture from Swedish sixties? Or perhaps old Italian luxury pieces? By selecting a specific style, you ensure that most likely all items will be able to match each other later on.

Make a choice when it comes to colors and materials as well. Does a noble oak wood, slightly yellowish teak, or perhaps dark wood furniture suit your newer furniture better? By sticking to one tone or material, it's more likely that the overall impression won't become too chaotic.

Like with everything else, there's also a rule when combining two styles - less is more! Don't put an antique TV table, coffee table, old armchair and old chandelier together in your living room. While such a view can look quite cool, it might not suit newer apartments, where two styles are usually combined more calmly.

The easiest thing is to replace individual items and exchange them for pieces that truly mean something to the owners and they really like. Otherwise in a modern living room, a contrasting bar cabinet or a bookshelf with respectable history can look really cool. It's also quite easy to pair old sofas with modern furniture.

But if you don't want to bring old and heavy furniture home, then it's easy to add an old-time feel to your home through accessories instead. A painting with history or a sculpture inherited from grandmother are ideal items for reminding the living room of the past. You can also add a carpet, chandelier, chair or clock from an antique shop.
