Despite the cool weather, we all want to make the most of summer and spend as much time outdoors as possible. If you have a terrace but don't use it much, that's a clear waste. We'll help you put an end to that.

Fix damaged spots

Before you start choosing furniture and decorating, inspect your terrace and make any necessary small repairs. You may need to replace a plank and do some painting or oiling work.

Choose furniture according to what you want to do on your terrace

As you know very well, there's no point in buying furniture just because it looks nice. It also needs to be comfortable and functional. Think through what you want to do on your terrace. Is it for sunbathing, entertaining guests, dining? If you have a large enough terrace, furniture for all these activities can fit nicely there.

If you don't have such a large terrace, we recommend first putting comfortable armchairs and a coffee table there. Loungers and dining sets can also be placed on the lawn if needed.

We've written about choosing garden and terrace furniture in this post.

Think about storage spaces

Carrying dishes and other necessary items from the kitchen or dining room to the yard can be quite tedious. It would be very nice to take a coffee cup or wine glass right from a terrace cabinet. Use a cabinet, nightstand, or shelf as storage where you can place things needed for coffee, grilling supplies, candles, or whatever you think is necessary. Maybe you keep work gloves and a hat in the bottom drawer.

Light it sufficiently

If you want to spend longer summer evenings on your terrace, it needs to be nicely lit. There are several options for this.

  • Wall lamps – great creators of a cozy atmosphere
  • Solar lights – lights powered by solar batteries that you can stick into the ground and easily move around as needed.
  • LED lanterns – the name sounds very modern, but lanterns still look very romantic.
  • Light strings – consisting of about 10 lamps and looking truly impressive. You can buy such a string for yourself for example here or here.

Hanging swings and chairs

Definitely consider installing a hanging swing or chair. Even if you have doubts at first, you'll soon find yourself relaxing in the swing more and more often.

Choose cheerful colored textiles

Because they simply improve your mood.

Protect against insects

If you have a covered terrace, you can also consider installing a mosquito net. Ask for quotes from window covering sellers, or if you're handy yourself, building supply stores also sell insect screens in rolls.

Sun umbrella

If you don't have a roof but want to spend time on your terrace during a light rain shower, or on the other hand – to get shade from the hot sun, it's worth buying a foldable sun umbrella.

Plants in boxes, pots and on the wall.

Buy beautiful colorful summer flowers from garden centers and plant them in boxes or planters. Also bring out indoor plants that won't mind the cool summer nights.

A good tip is to place some flower or herb pots on the wall and create a nicely green corner that way. If you don't want to damage your house wall, you can build such a wall from euro pallets.

Don't forget the trash bin

Inevitably, trash accumulates on a terrace – as it does everywhere else. Choose a woven trash bin with a lid for this purpose, one that doesn't stand out and rather decorates your beautiful outdoor living room.
