How to Reduce Heating Costs?
If your heating system has been updated and your house is properly insulated, it might seem like everything has been done to reduce heating costs. In reality, there are several more small tips that can help keep the costs of room heating down.
Clear things away from your heating appliances
Do you have a sofa or a larger piece of furniture in front of the radiator under the window? Rearrange your furniture so that warm air can circulate from the radiators. This way you can turn down their temperature a bit, because if the radiators are no longer hidden behind furniture, you'll need less heating to warm up the room.
What about heavy curtains?
Or do you have curtains in front of your radiators? Our recommendation is to also remove these from in front of the radiators, because it might seem to you that warm air passes through them, but actually that's not really the case. Try it, it's much warmer behind the curtains, isn't it?
Let the sun warm your room
Despite the fact that there's little sun to see in winter, you should pull the curtains completely away from the windows in all rooms when you leave for work in the morning, so that the sun can warm the room air. This way you can set the radiator thermostats to a slightly lower temperature and save a bit more money.
Do your windows and doors keep the heat in well enough?
If your windows don't keep the heat in, on windy days you can actually see how the curtains in front of the windows move. This means that cold air is coming into the room through the window gap. If this is the case, check the seals on your doors and windows, and if they need replacing, do it as soon as possible.
There's no need to overheat
If you want to save on heating costs, then get used to a slightly cooler room. You don't need to wear shorts in your house in winter, comfortable warm sweaters also want to be worn. Put one on, wrap yourself in a blanket and you'll feel how nice it is.
Don't keep your window in ventilation position
Ventilating rooms is extremely important, but don't do it slowly by keeping the window in ventilation position, but rather do it less frequently and properly. If the room needs air exchange, then open the window fully for a few minutes and close it when the air is fresh again.
Sleep in a cooler environment
It's impossible to sleep in an overheated room, so it makes sense to turn down the radiator thermostats a bit when you go to bed. Better sleep in this case also means lower heating costs.
