If your home has one well-thought-out utility room, you're in luck. We can confirm that in such a case, doing household chores (hello, ironing!) goes much more smoothly. And by the way, a functional utility room also increases the value of your property.

But in order to get the most out of such a room, it needs to be well planned. Let's assume your house is still in the planning phase and we have a lot of room to work with.

Let's get started!

Good location

It would be better if the utility room was not in the basement. It's simply very tedious to carry laundry baskets up and down, and who would want to iron laundry in a room without windows! The utility room should be pleasant to be in, and for that reason it would be especially nice if you could access the outdoors directly from it if needed, for example on a beautiful summer day to hang laundry on the line.

Also think about what's on the other side of the utility room wall. You don't want to hear your washing machine doing its job from your soft and comfortable bed. Ideally, the utility room would be located next to the kitchen.

Enough space

The utility room should accommodate cleaning supplies, a washing machine, a dryer, a vacuum cleaner, household chemicals, laundry baskets, and everything else that remotely suggests household items. It would be better if all such things were in one place and nothing in the bathroom or kitchen would remind you of cleaning.

It's good if the utility room can also fit a drying rack, in case for some reason you can't dry laundry outside or it doesn't make sense to put it in the dryer.

To save space, place the dryer (top-loading) on top of the washing machine.

Also, there should be enough space in this room for tasks like ironing laundry and other work. It's not just a place to put things away.

Sink

Plan a sink in the utility room as well. It's good for washing dustcloths, brushes, or whatever other things you need to wash.

Good ventilation

Since there's quite a bit of water use in this room, proper ventilation is essential.

Plenty of light

It's much better to do household chores when the room has a lot of light. It's especially nice if there's a large window that lets natural light into the room.

Non-slip flooring

When doing household chores, you're certainly in a hurry and so an accident can happen, for example, on a wet floor. For this reason, install flooring that's easy to clean but non-slip. You can certainly get good advice about this from the relevant showrooms or building supply stores.

Easy-to-maintain wall covering

The walls should be easy to wash and maintain. Ceramic tiles work best for this.

Plenty of outlets

Now that's a very important point! To avoid fussing with extension cords, equip this room with plenty of outlets. Better more than less!

Washing station

Leave a little space for a small wash area where you can wash rubber boots or your dog's paws if needed. And also your belly, if Pontu has gone overboard playing in the mud.

Storage space

Plan plenty of storage in the utility room. You surely have some things that are good to keep there, for example, socks whose pair has gone missing.

Hooks

Brushes and mops are best kept on the wall on hooks. This way you can easily grab the right tool and don't have to rummage around in a pile of brushes in the corner.

And if you're going to be doing this anyway, have some hooks on the wall where you can hang, for example, the clothes you wear when doing garden work.

Make your eyes happy too!

All this stuff could also look nice, right! Use beautiful woven baskets instead of plastic boxes and always choose household items that look cheerful.
