Demolition Works Already Underway on Haapsalu Peninsula
Scandium Kinnisvara and Everaus Kinnisvara are developing a completely new large-scale residential and leisure district on a peninsula located next to Haapsalu's Suur Viik. Land preparation work began in early June. Now the demolition of large dilapidated buildings is also in full swing.
In the developers' vision, landmark buildings that have withstood the test of time on the peninsula and characterize the area thanks to their architectural distinctiveness will be preserved and restructured. Thus, a former tall water tower will become a cultural tower with a café in the future, and a stone boathouse at the tip of the peninsula will become a restaurant with sea views. The remaining dilapidated buildings, such as old fish processing facilities and auxiliary structures, will be demolished so that development of the peninsula can proceed at a good pace. The construction stone resulting from the demolition is hoped to be reused as fill for the dunes being created on the peninsula, which will protect the residential quarter and the peninsula's visitors from winds and potential flooding.
"The Haapsalu project has received very positive feedback from the public and puts our teams' eyes shining every day. For this reason, we immediately began demolition work on deteriorating and dangerous buildings after acquiring the plot, so that we can soon open the area and proceed with the project at a brisk pace," said Maido Lüiste, chairman of the board of Scandium Kinnisvara.
"Green thinking and reuse are written into our identity and especially in the context of the historic resort town of Haapsalu, it makes perfect sense to reuse the resulting construction stone on site. The dunes planned by the architects' team are an excellent opportunity for this. The flood risk in coastal areas is a topic that becomes very important about every 15 years during major storms. The buildings rising here on the peninsula are right at the edge of the shore, which means that raising and protecting the landscape and buildings is an important part of the quarter's planning."
The demolition work is hoped to be completed by early autumn under the supervision of OK Ehitusteenus OÜ. After that, construction work is planned for the construction of a walking promenade, so that the area can be opened to the city's residents and visitors. The start of the first apartment building construction is planned for next year. www.marienholm.eu
