The European Commission has adopted a regulation that prohibits the sale of fluorescent light tubes in the European Union from September 2023. This regulation bans the sale of light sources containing mercury, as technological advances and the arrival of various environmentally friendly solutions in the lighting sector make it impractical to continue using fluorescent light tubes. (1) The most common fluorescent lights are the T5 linear fluorescent light tube and T8 linear fluorescent light tube, and their use has been prohibited since 24.08.2023 (2).

Who does the new regulation affect?

The regulation affects all companies, public institutions, kindergarten and school buildings, training facilities, restrooms, etc. As a result, all companies, households and other institutions must replace existing fluorescent light tubes with energy-efficient and environmentally safe LED light tubes.

How to tell if you are using a fluorescent light or an LED light?

Fluorescent light tubes are generally characterized by a longer time to reach full light output and "flickering" when the light is on. At the end of the fluorescent tube's lifespan, the light begins to flicker and then stops working. Looking at the light tube, it is very difficult to distinguish whether it is a fluorescent tube or an LED tube. To be sure, you should contact your building manager, electrician or other specialist and find out what type of light tubes are used in your facility.

What do I need to do?

LED House recommends that all companies and institutions review what lights are in use on their premises and not leave the replacement of fluorescent light tubes with LED light tubes until the last moment.
