First Concrete Sauna – "Summer"

The concrete prefabrication company PR Betoon OÜ has completed the first sauna house "Suvi" cast from monolithic concrete.

"We have not encountered a sauna house with an entirely concrete body anywhere – neither in Estonia nor in the wider world," said Peep Roosmann, chairman of the board at PR Betoon.

The structural core of the concrete sauna is formed by a 100-millimeter monolithic concrete shell, which is cast between a formwork with finely sawn boards on the outside and a formwork with planed boards on the inside.

The back of the sauna is made of wood and the front is made of glass.

The sauna is fully equipped – it has water, a shower, a hot water tank, electrical connections with a switchboard, lighting, and a wood-fired stove.

The concrete sauna package also includes a well frame executed in the same style.

"It doesn't rot, it doesn't decay, ants won't eat it," describes Peep Roosmann, the author and creator of the concrete sauna idea. "The sauna itself is extremely quiet, pleasantly humid."

The idea for the concrete sauna was inspired by the original concrete bus shelter pavilions designed and created by PR Betoon, with the pavilion built in Laulasmaa serving as the direct model for the sauna house.

"A unique complete solution, a one-of-a-kind handcrafted product," says Roosmann. "The interest is to showcase concrete."
