Housing development company Bonava laid the cornerstone for the first phase of Kirsiõue in Saku. The four-story residential building at Soo St. 5 with 32 apartments will be ready for move-in in the summer of 2026. In total, seven residential buildings with 175 homes are planned for the Kirsiõue area.

Future Kirsiõue residents and Saku Municipality Mayor Marti Rehemaa participated in the cornerstone laying ceremony. "I am pleased that the number of residents in Saku Municipality is growing and people have more opportunities to choose a new home here. I'm sure you will settle in easily and find pleasant sports facilities, good school and kindergarten spots for your children, and it's not far to go to Tallinn either," Rehemaa said in greeting to the future residents. The mayor pointed out that Saku is not getting too many apartment buildings per year, which gives the municipality the opportunity to calmly plan kindergarten and school places in a longer-term perspective.

"Kirsiõue is Bonava's first development outside Tallinn. Saku is a good and well-established living environment where everything is within reach, there is plenty of greenery, and it is a good place for families with children. This does not differ from our previous strategy focused on the capital city – to develop happy neighborhoods in established environments," said Taavi Soorm, CEO of Bonava Estonia.

The tradition of laying a cornerstone, which goes back thousands of years, symbolizes the creation of a stable and lasting foundation for a building so that the structure will endure, and according to custom, symbolic items with good fortune meanings are placed in a time capsule. The following items were placed in the time capsule of Kirsiõue's first cornerstone:

  • Fresh Saku Sõnumid (Saku News) from the Saku Municipality Mayor – so that future generations can see what happened in the year 2025;

  • Symbolic personal items brought along by future Kirsiõue residents;

  • A memory stick with building project information;

  • A slice of black bread, so that no resident of the building would have to go hungry;

  • A piece of charcoal, to keep fire disasters away;

  • A rowan berry, to bring good fortune to homes and keep evil spirits away;

  • The business card of Bonava's construction manager, which he places in every time capsule

 Kirsiõue homes will be assigned the energy-efficient A energy class, and comfortable living arrangements are provided by a designated parking space in the residential courtyard and a storage room on the first floor. The homes feature spacious balconies and terraces, the residents' courtyard will have a recreation area for exercise and stretching, a small children's playground, and a picnic area with a pergola and grilling facilities.
