Aravet Biogas Plant Produced Three Months' Worth of Green Gas in Its First Year of Operation
Bioforce Aravete OÜ launched a purification unit a year ago at the Aravete biogas plant, where methane is extracted from biogas, which can be used similarly to natural gas. In the future, Bioforce Group sees it possible to cover a significant portion of Estonia's gas consumption by building similar plants. Biomethane produced at Aravete is transported in pressurized gas containers to the buses of AS Tallinna Linnatransport.
According to Siim Tenno, board member of Bioforce Aravete OÜ, it is very important to increase the volume of environmentally friendly gas produced in Estonia. "In addition to reducing our carbon footprint, we have an urgent need to reduce our dependence on fossil energy sources. Biomethane as a local and environmentally friendly fuel is important both for reducing greenhouse gases and for improving energy security," said Tenno.
Bioforce Group, which develops, builds and operates biomethane plants and compressed gas stations, is launching its second biomethane plant in Ebavere in addition to the Aravete biomethane plant, and by 2028 the group's team has set itself the goal of producing at least 600 GWh of biomethane, which would likely cover the entire natural gas consumption in Estonia's transport sector.
Today, the Aravete biomethane plant celebrated its first anniversary, and it was noted that the group's first biomethane plant has started operating successfully and in one year has managed to produce more than 38 GWh of biomethane. With such a significant amount of biomethane, it is possible, for example, for one AS Tallinna Linnatransport bus to travel approximately five million line kilometers. All TLT compressed gas buses could serve their routes for nearly three months with this biomethane.
Siim Tenno said that the biomethane produced at the plant is an important addition to Estonia's biomethane production and emphasized the plant's high reliability. Tenno also highlighted good cooperation with Aravete Biogaas OÜ, whose team has been of great help in launching and operating the plant. The Aravete biogas plant was already opened in 2012, when it began producing electricity and heat energy from manure and biomass. In April 2022, Bioforce Aravete OÜ added a purification unit to the plant for biomethane production.
