13 Buildings Compete in the Building of the Year 2022 Contest
The Estonian Concrete Association and the Estonian Association of Construction Materials Producers organized a competition for "Concrete Structure of the Year 2022" and received 13 entries.
"Several structures of significant importance are competing in our competition: Tallinn School of Music and Ballet, the first monolithic concrete ecoduct on Estonian highways, the LNG terminal mooring quay," said Imre Leetma, chairman of the board of the Estonian Concrete Association. "We are pleased to see several quality residential buildings with striking architecture in the competition," Leetma added.
According to Imre Leetma, the long line of outstanding educational and cultural institutions continues in the concrete structure competition: MUBA, Viimsi Artium, Holy John's School.
Imre Leetma: "Narva city's river promenade has received a long-awaited addition, whose most significant feature is the so-called 5-kroon viewing platform and the execution of the legendary view as graphic concrete on concrete."
The board of the Estonian Concrete Association confirmed all 13 structures submitted to the competition as nominees for "Concrete Structure of the Year 2022".
"In Estonian infrastructure construction, concrete structures hold an important place, as do they in our competition – the Väo traffic junction, the Puiatu ecoduct on the Tallinn-Tartu highway," said Toomas Vainola, executive director of the Estonian Concrete Association. "The glorious line of concrete port structures continues with the LNG terminal mooring quay, where the pouring achieved a new record distance for concrete pouring in Estonia using a new pipeline method."
Competing for the title of 2022 Concrete Structure are:

- Residential building in Haabneeme, Ilvese tee 7, Haabneeme, Viimsi municipality, Harju County
- Järve towers, apartment buildings with commercial spaces, Järve 2, Tallinn
- Kalaranna quarter, apartment buildings with commercial spaces phase I-II, Kalaranna Street, Tallinn
- Residential building at Kentmanni 28, Kentmanni 28, Tallinn
- Kindrali Buildings, apartment buildings with commercial spaces, Sammu 5/Talli 4, Sõjakooli 14 and 16, Rivi 6/Talli 2, Tallinn
- Narva 5-kroon viewing platform, Grafovi Street, Narva
- LNG terminal mooring quay, Pakri Peninsula, Lääne-Harju municipality, Harju County
- Puiatu ecoduct, Tallinn-Tartu highway, Võõbu-Mäo section, Järva municipality, Järva County

The aim of the competition is to find and highlight buildings whose appearance and efficient and economical execution demonstrate the advantages and possibilities of concrete as a domestic material.
The winning project or structure is one where significant contribution has come from the work of companies registered in Estonia and concrete materials supplied from Estonia. In selecting the winning work, the professionalism and demandingness of the object's design and construction, quality and innovativeness are also taken into account.
The grand prize belongs to the author of the winning idea. Recognition is given to the client, designer, builder, concrete and structures supplier of the winning project.
The jury for this twenty-third competition includes representatives of the Estonian Association of Architects, the Estonian Concrete Association, the Estonian Association of Construction Enterprises, the Estonian Association of Construction Engineers, the Estonian Association of Construction Consulting Companies, the Estonian Association of Construction Materials Producers, Kunda Nordic Cement, and construction media.
The competition jury begins its work in January.
The winner will be announced on Concrete Day on March 16, 2023.
