5 Interior Design Mistakes That Are Easy to Avoid

Have you ever visited someone's home where everything seems to be in place: the cushions and curtains are admittedly from completely different fairy tales, but both add something to the room. No single color tone dominates and nothing seems excessive. And that old bench fit perfectly into the modern apartment. How did they manage that? The answer is simple – the owner of that apartment or house clearly knew how to avoid some of the most common mistakes made in interior design. Let's go through them together.

1.Everything is coordinated with each other

Yes, all elements should tie a home together as a unified whole, but that doesn't mean they have to be in the same color tone. We once visited a hair salon where everything possible was in purple. Even the flowers in the vase. Fortunately, we left without purple hair, but we certainly experienced a proper interior design shock.

Use the 60-30-10 rule when choosing colors. Let 60% of colors be in the main tone, for example walls and carpet or walls and sofa, 30% another color tone, such as an armchair and some textiles or also one wall, and 10% should be an accent that supports the other colors.

Just as matching curtains and carpets of the same color are outdated, so is using the same fabric for curtains and sofa cushions a thing of the past. Contemporary interior design approves of mixing colors, materials, and styles, and the result is truly personal and cool homes.

2.Too many things

It is entirely understandable that in furnishing stores there are more beautiful things than could ever fit into anyone's home. That's why we need to keep our heads cool in stores so we don't overload our small homes with things. Too many things can make any room look like a storage room or shed, where a beautiful overall picture has gradually disappeared.

Think carefully before buying something new for any room. Perhaps it's time for some of your older things to go? For example, to get a new life at a country house or to wait for a new owner on a classifieds portal?

3.Furniture in the wrong size

The most common examples of interior elements in the wrong size are probably a too-small rug in the middle of the room or a huge sofa in a tiny living room.

When you're designing a room or simply buying something new, think about the proportions of that specific room and how the item you're buying will fit in with the sizes of other things in that room.

For example, you can't place one small picture above a sofa. To balance each other out, in this case there should be a whole collection of smaller pictures or you should choose artwork of larger dimensions.

4.Too little light

If a room is dark, even the most beautiful interior design is of no use. To sufficiently light a room, one light fixture hanging from the ceiling is not enough. Make sure the light is at different heights – use ceiling lights, floor lamps, and table lamps for this. When you return from the store with your new purchases, you'll immediately see how what used to look like a cave-like room now shines or acquires a cozy atmosphere.

5.All purchases at once

We understand you perfectly when you say you don't want to wait two months for buying a carpet or a lamp. You'd want everything right now, wouldn't you? But sometimes it's that right thing that deserves to wait, and in your haste, you'll end up regretting a hasty purchase.

Every room needs so to speak a break-in period, during which you can understand how and when you use each thing in the space, and what exactly is missing from your ideal interior design. Maybe you'll come across the missing floor lamp while visiting some vintage fair next summer? In any case, we're curious and intend to explore more than one of these stories from start to finish.
